Monday Musings: Nine years of Honey Badgerin'!! 🎉
Hello!
Hope you had a great weekend, friend. It's so glorious to be out in the world in the beauty of summer. Hold on to that warmth and let it propel you through another week!
Today's musings include a story, an invitation, and a request. (Scroll on down if you're just here for our show schedule!) First, the story of our first live show in four months. On Saturday we drove almost the full length of Delaware to get to our destination, Trap Pond State Park. Side note to the non-Delawareans: you can drive the length of our state in around 2 hours. Also, you can walk the width of our state in less than a day. We've done both. :) But I digress. We drove downstate with just about every piece of audio equipment we own packed into our little hatchback. After months of not playing live, we wanted to be extra sure we had everything we needed. When we arrived at Trap Pond we happily took in the gorgeous setting that we would be performing in - a brick patio surrounded by tall trees, sloping down to a lake that sparkled under the summer sun.
Michael got all our gear set up while I hobbled around on crutches trying to be useful. Audience members found their seats at picnic tables and in camp chairs, everyone safely distanced from one another. We were SO excited. Then at 6:30pm, right as we were about to begin, the sky opened up with a summer rain storm. Michael undid all his previous work, tucking precious instruments and speakers under the eaves of the nature center. I hobbled around being the opposite of helpful.
After a 20 minute downpour, during which we kept refreshing the storm radar on our phones, the sun peeked out again and we decided to give it another try. Let me reiterate that we had not performed in front of actual humans for 4 months. A little rain was not going to stop us! So we did it! We played three songs to a wonderful audience. We heard applause for the first time since March. It felt really, really good. And then, in the middle of the third song, it started drizzling. By the end of the song it was solidly raining. A minute after that, it was straight up pouring, and we were scrambling to get everything inside, with the help of the park staff and some incredible audience members. Click here to watch a timelapse of the tragic end of the set, featuring me not being useful. :D
Really though, the whole evening was a testament to human kindness. As musicians we are always reliant on our connection to other people, in so many different ways. It's a nice reminder to see that connection in such a tangible form. If you were there, a million thanks for showing up, sticking around through the rain, enjoying our short set, and helping us save our gear!! You were the best part of the night.
Next up - you're invited to a very special online show! We are celebrating our 9th year as a duo this week, and we would love for you to come celebrate with us. We'll be live streaming on our Facebook page on Wednesday, July 15th at 8pm. We always try to make our online shows fun, but this one will be extra special. Whether you just discovered us this year, or you've been here since 2011, tune in on Wednesday for a good night of music, goofiness, and probably some nostalgic storytelling.
And that brings us to the request! We want to make Wednesday's show as interactive and fun for you as possible, so we're going to try a Q & A portion of the show! If you have any questions for The Honey Badgers, small or big, silly or deep, let us know! You can respond directly to this email, and we'll incorporate your question into our show. Also, let us know if you have any song requests and we'll see what we can do. :)
